Redman "Muddy Waters Too" (Album Stream)

Muddy Waters Too is the long-awaited ninth studio album by Brick City's Redman, and sequel to his classic 1996 album Muddy Waters. The album was finally released after fifteen years of anticipation going back as early as 2009. In 2015, following the release of his eighth studio album, Mudface, Redman was interviewed about his personal ranking of his own albums, and in that interview, Red stated that Mudface was more of an EP to hold the fans over until Muddy Waters Too finally dropped. We waited. Over 30 joints are now available on Muddy Waters Too, featuring Red's unique blend of humor and bar-heavy delivery. The project boasts a super-cut with all Jersey legends such as Naughty By Nature, Queen Latifah, Rah Digga, Shaq, Lords of the Underground, Lady Luck, Artifacts, Nikki D, Heather B, Hakim Green from Channel Live, and... well, hopefully I didn't miss anyone. Also featured on the album is long-time collaborator Method Man, Kid Capri, Faith Evans, Sheek Louch, Snoop Dogg, Melanie Rutherford, KRS-One + more. Don't skip the skits! Enjoy below...

Apollo Brown & Crimeapple "This, Is Not That" (Album Stream)

When Apollo Brown and Crimeapple connect, it’s like old film grain under a projector—gritty, timeless. This album isn’t just boom-bap nostalgia; it’s a rebirth of smoke-stained bars, where Crimeapple plays both poet and philosopher, flipping bilingual manteca rhymes with a chef’s precision, stirring up the street grime and serving it with a side of sharp wit. Apollo Brown, as always, builds his beats like ancient architecture—dusty, soulful, and heavy with forgotten stories. These tracks sound like the cracks in the sidewalk talking back, the perfect companion for long nights and even longer thoughts. It’s a sonic novel, a street sermon, and Crimeapple’s wordplay dances through it like grease sizzling in a pan, a reminder that even in decay, there’s beauty. Dig in...

Chino XL "Darkness and Other Colors" (Album Stream)

Chino XL, the legendary lyricist and actor, has unveiled his long-awaited magnum opus, Darkness & Other Colors, a brilliantly produced masterpiece by the exceptional BodyBagBen. This marks Chino’s sixth full-length studio LP, albeit his posthumous debut, showcasing the unparalleled talent of the East Orange, New Jersey emcee. The release of Darkness & Other Colors was not without controversy. There was some drama between Chino’s estate and Holy Toledo Productions founder and A&R extraordinaire M80. However, anyone who admires Chino’s artistry can understand why M80 was determined to bring this album to light. It offers a vivid explanation of Chino’s dedication to perfection, which he worked tirelessly to achieve back in 2020 during the COVID lockdowns when he was still with us. This one is tough to hear, especially the opening track. May Chino rest in peace.

Kendrick Lamar "GNX" (Album Stream)

GNX is Kendrick Lamar’s surprise-release sixth studio album. It's his first to be released outside of the Top Dawg Entertainment umbrella, and comes months after his highly-publicized feud with Drake. For months, many rumors circulated amongst fans about the album’s release, though none seemed to materialize. The first signal of new music releasing beyond Kendrick’s rap feud emerged in the “Not Like Us” music video—briefly previewing a track that would be later known as "squabble up." So much has and will be said about this project, that I don't think we need to drag this out any further. The Super Bowl performance is sure to break records/numbers but in all honesty, I think the beef has run its course. The rest of it can play out behind the scenes. That said, Kendrick makes great music, and on its own merit, this project is very solid. When Drake releases new music, his fans will run those numbers up too. Beef isn't the same anymore. Hear Kendrick's GNX below...

Ant "Collection of Sounds Vol. 2" (Instrumental Album)

Collection of Sounds: Vol. 2 is the second in a series of four albums of unreleased material from the vault of distinguished hip-hop producer Anthony “Ant” Davis (one half of Atmosphere, productions for MF DOOM, Brother Ali, Murs, Rav, Sage Francis, and more), offering a new window into his decades-long career and pushing his artistry to the center. Ant’s production is known for its rich, textured soundscapes that blend vintage and soulful elements with deep emotional resonance. The second installment of his instrumental series, Collection of Sounds: Vol. 2, features smooth beats, intricate sampling, and lush, jazzy layers that create an immersive atmosphere. He masterfully incorporates sly riffs and funk-laden grooves, stirring sentimentality and highlighting his ability to craft emotive, engaging music. The result is a sonically complex album where Ant blends funk, soul, classic R&B, and hip-hop influences, evoking a nostalgic sense of bygone eras. Ant’s introspective approach is complemented by a dynamic, vibrant energy in Collection of Sounds: Vol. 2. His production on “Damn Koop 2012” and “Claps, Cuica and Synth Part 2” includes playful, funky samples and energetic rhythms that infuse the music with a lively, upbeat quality. He balances this with laid-back, reflective songs like “Changes,” and “Velvet Ish,” featuring a mellow, retro ambiance. The beats are marked by crisp drum patterns and varied melodies, showcasing a broad range of influences. This versatility demonstrates Ant’s skill in navigating both introspective and spirited musical landscapes.

Rest In Peace, Saafir! (1970-2024)

We lost another rap icon with the passing of Saafir. The artist was most famed for his time as part of the Golden State Warriors (or Golden State Project) – a hip-hop collective that gained a devoted following in the Bay Area throughout the late ‘90s. He was a part of the band alongside Xzibit and Ras Kass. News of his death was confirmed by Xzibit, who shared an update on social media paying tribute. He also said that the rapper – whose real name was Reggie Gibson – passed away on Tuesday morning (November 19). “I can’t believe I’m writing this right now, but don’t know what else to do at the moment. Approximately at 8:45am this morning, my brother Reggie known to the world as Saafir passed away,” he wrote, sharing a photo of his former groupmate.  “We have so much history I can’t even explain what I’m feeling right now. We surrounded him and let him know how much we loved him. He can rest now.” He continued: “My soul is crushed. We love you Bro.” At time of writing, few details are known about the circumstances of Saafir’s cause of death. A source speaking to TMZ said that the rapper had been living with a number of health issues over recent years, and died in his hometown of Oakland. According to reports, the artist had a cancerous tumour removed from his spine and later went on to begin using a wheelchair. So far, the cause of his death has not been publicly shared. Rest In Peace, Saafir. In the archives is his Next feature in Vibe; Unsigned Hype in The Source; his original demo tape and his infamous battle with Casual + more. Thanks to NME for the info shared above... they said it better than I could have. R.I.P., Saafir.

The Notorious B.I.G. "Ready To Die" (30th Anniv. Mix by DJ Filthy Rich)

Shout-out to the homie, DJ Filthy Rich out of Toronto, who continues to bless us with these fine tribute mixes. The latest installment pays tribute to the late Notorious B.I.G. and his classic debut album, Ready To Die, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Some albums just mark the time and I can remember so vividly sitting with this album in McClancy High School out in Queens, NY. Updated from his 25th anniversary mix, this is Volume 1 of the 30th with original samples and classic cuts from 1994. Rest In Peace, Notorious B.I.G. and DJ Mister Cee.  Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions a small piece of the mix has been muted, but rock with it anyway y'all. Dig in...

MF Doom "MM..FOOD" (20th Anniversary Edition)

In celebration of the album’s 20th anniversary, MM..FOOD has been repackaged with all new artwork by Sam Rodriguez! Originally released in 2004, MF DOOM's MM..FOOD is hailed as a classic hip-hop album full of inventive production, remarkable wordplay, and unique themes. Celebrated for its seamless blend of humor, wit, and social commentary, the album ushers listeners into a bizarre world of food-related metaphors, painting a bitterly comedic portrait of a life tainted by vice, violence, and jealousy. It was a brilliant and novel concept that gave DOOM plenty of room to explore the album’s subjects. Throughout MM..FOOD, DOOM embeds complex ideas within seemingly simple narratives. Album opener “Beef Rapp” is a multi-pronged metaphor reminding listeners of the dangers involved in the glorification of conflict, especially within the rap game. “Hoe Cakes” borrows its name from the sweet, hot water cornmeal patties, which he uses as a symbol to rhyme about indulgence and excess. Continuing the motif, DOOM uses the Madlib-produced “One Beer” to fold layers of depth about escapism and ego, while the popular “Rapp Snitch Knishes” critiques the self-incrimination and contradictory behaviors of some rappers. Overall, MM..FOOD is both a social commentary and a piece of social satire, showcasing MF DOOM’s ability to blend serious themes with his unique, playful lyrical style. The digital version of the 20th Anniversary Edition features 11 bonus tracks including 3 remixes, 1 alternate edit, and 7 rare and insightful clips of MF DOOM being interviewed by Kevin Beacham, just days before the original album release in 2004. R.I.P., MF DOOM.

G-Unit "God's Plan" (Mixed by DJ Whoo Kid, 2002)

God's Plan is the third mixape released by G-Unit. It was initially distributed as an independent release on November 1, 2002, but was later re-released in 2006 by BCD Music Group. God's Plan emerged during a prolific era for G-Unit, preceding 50 Cent's official debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin', in 2003. The mixtape features a collection of tracks where the group showcased their lyricism over instrumentals from other artists. This approach of reinterpreting existing beats allowed G-Unit to infuse familiar sounds with their distinct style, creating a unique listening experience that resonated with fans. The cultural importance of God's Plan extends beyond its tracks. By rapping over instrumentals from other artists and releasing it for free, 50 Cent and G-Unit helped create a model that other artists would later follow. In recognition of its impact, God's Plan was named the 9th best mixtape ever by XXL magazine. God's Plan not only showcased G-Unit's raw talent and adaptability but also underscored their strategic approach to music distribution, challenging traditional industry norms and paving the way for a new era in hip-hop. By the time God’s Plan dropped, 50 Cent was already building a strong buzz from Guess Who’s Back? and 50 Cent Is the Future. But God’s Plan was another level—it made it clear that he wasn’t just an underground sensation; he was about to take over mainstream rap. The energy, the aggressive delivery, and the raw storytelling on God’s Plan were all previews of what he’d refine on Get Rich or Die Tryin’, which went on to be a classic (certified 9x Platinum as of 2020). Listen to God's Plan...

Lloyd Banks "Halloween Havoc 5" (Album Stream)

Lloyd Banks is back with a brand-new installment of his classic Halloween Havoc series. Halloween Havoc 5 was released via Money By Any Means Inc and features 16 hard-hitting joints. The production is consistent throughout despite being handled my multiple producers such as Ron Browz, Cartune Beatz, Arkatekt Beats, Mr. Authentic, Haas Almahdi, George Getson, Formula2beatz and more. On Instagram, Banks shared, "You already know what I do around this time of year!! And nothing's gonna change... HHV loading!!" Yes, indeed. I haven't covered all the installments on this site, but best believe I was tapped into each and every one of them over the years. I still run the joint "History" (and "History 2" for that matter) on repeat. Whether introspective lyrics or the PLK Banks, he's one of the premier artists whose lyrics and pen I truly respect. Troubleneck Brothers "Love/Hate" (Album Release)

Love/Hate combines several demo tracks from the Troubleneck Brothers' early-to-mid 90's tapes including instant classics such as "Back 2 The Hip Hop". Hailing from New York's Harlem and Uptown, the crew consisting of Soundwave, Moetown, Prophet, Blunt, Stepchild, Shaft and Nat 1 created some heavy buzz on the underground scene with their classic East Coast sound. Man, "Troubleneck Wreck" was one of my favorite pieces of vinyl back in the 90s. This release includes a demo version of that track and many others. Their early joints were released on StepSun Music Entertainment, whose parent label was Tommy Boy Records. Bill Stephney had a real ear for music. It's nice to see these rare demo joints unearthed from the Troubleneck Brothers, listen to it via 90s Tapes below...

Ghostface Killah "Ironman" (Vibe Magazine, 1996)

Following his Shao Lin brethren, the once mysterious clan member Ghostface Killah (a.k.a. Tony Starks) finally opens his own chamber with Ironman. Like his raw-vocaled counterpart Chef Raekwon, Ghostface bangs out sarcastic, street-camouflaged wildness. And leaves it up to the twisted mind of the RZA to cook up beats that take you back to the chills you got when listening to Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Over the title track's threatening bass line, jingly beat, and 1930s gangster-style trumpet, Ghostface, Raekwon, and Cappadonna f#ck up your head with rhymes like "One gallon of wildon' Park Hill profilin' / I'll cut your face a buck fifty sure / Why you smilin'?" On "Two Sixty" -- which sounds like part two of Raekwon's "Spot Rusherz" -- Rae and Ghost trade ideas for a robbery scheme. Don't think, though, that Ironman is just 60 minutes of beef. Starks kept everyone in mind with songs like "Camay" (a Teddy Pendergrass-sampling joint for the ladies) and "Box In Hand," which takes it back to the park jams with the hook: "If you're walking down the street with your box in your hand / And you're playing the music of the Wu-Tang Clan...." In "All That I Got Is You," featuring a low-key Mary J. Blige, Ghostface gives his mom a salute that damn near breaks you down in tears. Snoop hit hard with the Dramatics; fittingly, Ghostface and Raekwon answer back with Philly soul legends the Delfonics on "Wu-Delfonics." "After the smoke is clear," they croon, "Delfonics and Wu-Tang still here." The Wu, of course, maintain raw rhyme tradition with Raekwon's rap, "My sun moves like a token truck / Speak in codes / Throw a fiend in a sleeper / Got beef with the globe." Considering the success of the five previous Wu-Tang projects, it might seem hard for the sixth to still make noise, but Ghostface screams. Ironman is proof of his matured lyrics and delivery and the Wu's strong family stand. If Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... had you open, prepare for another gaping wound. - Vibe (12/96). Revisit Ghost's classic debut...

Che returns with The Lotus Child. I missed a few joints no doubt, but it's hard to keep up with everything these days! The Lotus Child is a really focused effort from Che, featuring a nice joint with Rapsody; 38 Spesh, Jack Davey and my brother Statik Selektah blessed her on this project as well with the touching track, "Angels." Rest In Peace, DJ Clark Kent (Sept. 28, 1966 - Oct. 24, 2024)

DJ Clark Kent — born Rodolfo Franklin — has died at 58 years old following a three-year battle with colon cancer. Clark Kent’s family confirmed his death in a statement posted to the super-producer’s Instagram page on Friday afternoon (Oct. 25). “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of the beloved Rodolfo A. Franklin, known to the world as DJ Clark Kent,” the statement reads. “Clark passed away Thursday evening surrounded by his devoted wife Kesha, daughter Kabriah and son Antonio.” The post continued to touch on Clark Kent’s private battle with cancer. “Clark quietly and valiantly fought a three year battle with Colon Cancer, while continuing to share his gifts with the world,” they added. “The family is grateful for everyone’s love, support and prayers during this time and ask for privacy as they process this immense loss.” - Billboard. A nostalgia site like this one couldn't exist without the cultural impact and legacy of artists like Clark Kent. Deepest condolences to his family and all his loved ones. Rest In Peace to God’s Favorite DJ.

Kurious "Majician" (Album Stream)

By his early 20s, Kurious was already an in-demand voice on the mic. His 1994 major label debut album, A Constipated Monkey, is a classic of its style, marked by heavy beats and nimble rhymes that are razor-sharp yet frequently hilarious. Despite being hailed as one of hip-hop’s most compelling lyricists, he didn’t release another solo LP for the rest of that decade, but he continued to be sought after. As he prepares for the release of his new album, Majician -- the nickname his peers blessed him with a generation ago—Kurious is well on his way to establishing the legacy he’s long deserved. The LP, which was executive produced by MF DOOM before his passing, is a mesmerizing blend of technical wizardry and personal introspection. Produced in its entirety by Mono En Stereo, Majician is filled with songs like “Eye of Horus,” which dance on the line between confession and confrontation. “Separation Anxiety” is a personal bloodletting in the form of lyrical exercise; “Par For the Course” makes drum breaks from the early Reagan era sound totally revitalized. With the amount of hard work Kurious put into the writing and recording of this material, he’s removed all ambiguity from the question of whether he can stand as one of the premier MCs of his time. Listen to Majician from Kurious below and hit the tags for more posts...

Marcus D "The Keeper" (Album Stream)

The Keeper is the spiritual successor to Marcus D’s 2020 instrumental album, Kirin. Both album covers, designed by Tokyo-native Horinao, and the music itself, incorporate traditional Japanese mythology and cultural motifs. While Marcus D has long been known for his signature blend of hard drum breaks and complex melodies, The Keeper takes a more organic approach to this sound, drawing inspiration from his vast synthesizer and record collection. The Keeper showcases a seamless fusion of both, marking a new chapter in the producer's ever-evolving catalogue. I got put on to Marcus D several years ago through One Be Lo, who is featured on multiple projects, including this one. Also featured here is Noveliss, Substantial and more. Reel Speakers, a four-track EP stemming from freestyles Shad did on socials, is a compact, high-energy listening with beat, grit, soul, and hope. The pair met at DJ Jazzy Jeff’s iconic Playlist Retreat years prior and connected over freestyles Shad was doing on Instagram to celebrate Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary. 14KT started crafting a beat for one of the freestyles online, and the project eventually took shape and birthed Reel Speakers. I've had the pleasure of connecting with MC Lyte over the years and her support for my artist Eternia was felt and appreciated on multiple occasions - from shows in Brooklyn to brief interviews and words of advice. LL Cool J "The Force" (Album Stream)

Queens Hip-Hop legend LL Cool J returns with The FORCE, his first new album in more than a decade. Produced in its entirety by A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip, The FORCE (an acronym for Frequencies Of Real Creative Energy) represents years of intense work. The result is an album that sounds thoroughly modern – full of razor-sharp writing and nimble, elastic vocals – but rooted in a rich tradition. Our legends are locking in and reminding us that they shouldn't be written off and that can still create. Is it a question of relevancy or love for the craft? I believe it's a genuine love for the music, because Rakim, LL, MC Lyte, and others have all released quality music as of late. We are seeing our legends and peers pass away at early ages, there is no time better than the present to give these artists their flowers and hear the music that they want to create. Dig in...

Ant "Collection of Sounds Vol. 1" (Instrumental Album)

Anthony “Ant” Davis is a distinguished hip-hop producer, one-half of the renowned duo Atmosphere, and a founding member of independent record label Rhymesayers Entertainment. His decades-long career of beat-making has also included works for MF DOOM, Brother Ali, Murs, Rav, Sage Francis and a dozen others. Raised in a military family, his nomadic upbringing exposed him to many diverse influences and, coupled with his father’s love for collecting records, laid the groundwork for his deep appreciation for all sorts of music. Ant’s latest endeavor, Collection of Sounds, is a four-volume series of instrumental works showcasing the breadth and depth of his musical expertise. The Collection of Sounds series offers a window into Ant's creative journey, reflecting his evolution as an artist over the years. Drawing from a vast vault of unreleased material, he’s exhumed cross sections of his catalog with surgical precision, organizing songs by sound rather than mere chronology. Volume 1 is at times so intimate as to border on claustrophobia, like the creeping “Bar One,” or the haunted twinkling of “I Was Always a Collector,” while other tracks are expansive enough to fill entire venues, like the forebodingly airy “4-Track Beyond Beat 1996." Many of the beats on Collection of Sounds: Volume 1 have pockets that are practically begging for rappers to explore. Collection of Sounds is not about forgetting who you are—it’s about remembering, reconfiguring, and reimagining, all at once; a testament to Ant's artistic integrity. Listen to it below...

Diamond D is back with the 3rd installment of his Diam Piece series, The Diam Piece 3: Initium. These projects have been consistently dope, so I expect no less from this latest offering. To me, Diamond D's Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop might still be the greatest solo release out the Diggin In The Crates catalog. It's in the top 5 anyway. Am I wrong? Rest In Peace, Chino XL!

Chino XL, the rapper whose bold lyricism and relentless fearlessness garnered both respect and controversy throughout his career, has died at the age of 50. In a joint statement released on Tuesday, the family of the New York rapper, born Derek Emmanuel Barbosa, confirmed that he had died at his home on Sunday morning. “Our father had many titles — King of Punchlines, Puerto Rican Superhero — but the most important one was Girl Dad,” his daughters wrote. “And what he gave us most in that role was his strength, straightforwardness, and ability to be super realistic. The main thing we are feeling now is that our Dad is at peace, and so we are at peace.” - Rolling Stone. Chino was a great dude and a wizard with words. I feel honored to have met and communicated with him over the years. I'm saddened that some of our brief conversations were left with things unsaid, but I do believe I gave him his flowers and felt encouraged by his willingness to stay in contact + build with my artists. There was a mutual respect that was always felt and appreciated. "Father's Day" is one of the greatest, most vulnerable records ever created; it'll be even more painful to listen to it now. My deepest condolences to all his friends and family. Rest In Peace, Chino XL. I know his legacy will live on through his music and family. More info will be passed on as it's available. Below are just a few of the countless messages of love/respect from his peers.

Rakim "G.O.D.’S NETWORK (REB7RTH)" (Album Stream)

Hip-hop legend Rakim is breaking new ground with his upcoming studio album, G.O.D.’S NETWORK (REB7RTH), by flexing his skills both on the mic and behind the boards. Widely lauded as the best lyricist of all time, The God MC himself is blessing the culture with the next step in his historic career. G.O.D.’S NETWORK (REB7RTH) is proof that Rakim is truly one of the most special artists we’ve known not just in hip-hop, but all of music. You can tell he feels that level of praise when speaking about the genesis of the album. “Having the ability to showcase my talents behind the boards coupled with the elite lyricism the world already knows and gives me infinite praise for alongside some of the best talents to ever do it is truly a blessing and for that I am humbled,” he said. For fans of hip-hop, and especially of Rakim’s storied discography, there is so much to love on this record. You can hear his hunger as an emcee and producer on every track, as well as his desire to collaborate with so many respected artists. Despite having decades in the game and many classics to his name, it feels like Rakim is just getting started. - via Rakim Presents. Listen below...

Common & Pete Rock "The Auditorium, Vol.1" (Album Stream)

Pete Rock and Common finally got together to craft an album in 2024... a possible dream collaboration! The Auditorium, Vol. 1 is everything you thought it would be: dope lyrics and crisp production. About the album, Common shared, "Pete Rock is one of The Greatest Creators Hip Hop and Music has ever seen. It has been a dream of mine to work with him on an album. And once we got together and I was around him and all his records and his MPC I felt the spirit of what I always loved in hip hop, in soul music, and why I wanted to be a part of the artform. His beats, his production, his scratches, took me to a place where I could just MC freely. It felt like I was home." Back in 1996, Common got with Pete Rock who produced his classic diss track to Ice Cube, "The Bitch In Yoo." Common was also featured on Pete's Soul Survivor album in '98. Stream the LP below...

Action Bronson "Johann Sebastian Bachlava the Doctor" (Album Stream)

Queens rapper Action Bronson may not be classically trained, but on his 2024 album, Johann Sebastian Bachlava the Doctor, he takes inspiration from Bacj and treats each song like he's got an entire orchestra at his disposal. With production from Daringer and The Alchemist, Bronson creates a sonic palette maximal in spirit and substance. Psychedelic samples dance with booming drums, triumphant horns introduce Bronson's voice like he's a king entering his court. Everything is turned up to 11, and Bronson relishes the opportunity to flex with abandon.... This rap at its most luxurious.

Eminem "The Death of Slim Shady" (Album Stream)

In this riveting journey throughout his 12th studio album, The Death of Slim Shady, Eminem delves into uncharted territories, exploring the demise and rebirth of his iconic alter ego. With raw lyrical prowess and captivating storytelling, Eminem delivers an emotional rollercoaster that showcases his evolution. Eminem took out a faux obituary in the Detroit Free Press mourning the loss of his alter ego. It shares, "A product of Detroit who began his career there as a rogue splinter in the flourishing underground rap scene of the mid to late 1990s, Shady first became a household name in 1999 with the debut of his playfully deranged single "My Name Is," which -- along with its uniquely eye catching video -- exposed the young artist and his lyrics to a wider audience. That audience was soon exposed to the extreme darkness of the muse/rapper, as he led millions of music fans down a road that glorified a demonstrably nihilistic worldview. Ultimately, the very things that seemed to be the tools he used became calling cards that defined an existence that could only come to a sudden and horrific end. His complex and tortured existence has come to a close, and the legacy he leaves behind is no closer to resolution than the manner in which this character departed this world. May he truly find peace in an afterlife that he could not find on Earth." Slim Shady, did indeed, make a lasting impression. Listen to the story unfold on The Death of Slim Shady below...

Blu & Evidence "Los Angeles" (Album Stream)

Los Angeles is thew new album from Blu, entirely produced by Evidence of Dilated Peoples. The 13-track LP has guest features from MED, Domo Genesis, Navy Blue, Self Jupier, Cashus King, Kokane, CS Armstrong, Evidence and more. Kind of a surprise album - to me anyway - seeing how there was some interesting history between the two of them dating back to Blu's twitter rant several years back. Are we not supposed to mention that? Either way... glad that they peace'd that up and moved forward creatively to craft this fine project. Ev and Blu are two of my favorite artists - this is a nice marriage of their artistry. I don't suspect there will be much promotion or touring behind it, but I'm thankful they linked to bring us this fine offering. Check out the Los Angeles LP below...

MC Ren "Kizz My Black Azz EP" (June 30, 1992)

Before there was a group called N.W.A. there were individually, angry, young Black males; roaming through darkened alley ways, surviving the roughest of street tests and emerging, once again as survivors. All of them had a story to tell; all of them wanted to be heard; all of them searched for an answer. But the true base of power for any group has been the individual strength and character of its members. And now, since they've stepped the fuck off! another MC emerges for the fall out -- "The Black N!gga that they call Ren." At a time when we were starving from a lock of hosts to boast about the west coast, Ren was rehearsing for his debut. "I had a rep at Roosevelt Jr. High, me and DJ Train (of JJ Fad)." M.C. Ren went on to high school with his reputation in tow. By the time he graduated, Eazy-E, from around the corner, was knocking on his door. Back in 1987, "Eazy was trying to get me and Train to sign on Ruthless for a solo deal, but Ice Cube had left to go to school. Eazy had me write some material for the N.W.A. album, so me and Train's solo project had to be put on hold." Now, Ren is ready to rock the mic on his own. He's out to show and prove what he is made of, 'cauz "Real N!ggaz Don't Die." Listen to Kizz My Black Azz, cont'd below...

Kizz My Black Azz, the debut EP on Ruthless/Priority, is the first sign of life since N.W.A.'s EFIL4ZAGGIN. This six track EP was produced by Bobcat, a member of the Boogie Men Production team, which ironically produces some of Ice Cube's songs. "The Final Frontier" is the first single to hit the streets. "The Final Frontier" expresses Ren's lyrical intent to handle all MC's that think gangsta rap is just a category. "Rap is getting away from where it started," explains M.C. Ren. "Everybody is trying to be like Hammer and have a band playing behind their raps." The hook on this will have even the most passive of listeners thinking of Ren, whenever real rap is the subject, "Who iz it? - The Black N!gga that they call Ren." The intro kicks in with the 'back in the day' piano riff from "The Bridge Is Over," and is woven throughout the entire cut with a nice sax handling the breaks, while Ren flows like melted I-C-E. "Right Up My Alley" begins as a neighborhood eviction of the local smokers (crack addicts) from the alley in which Ren reigns supreme and turns into the news story of the week. Our reporter Ren spins the rhymes and weaves the tell tell story of the day to day events in the alley; "90% of the black males from the streets got a spot in their neighborhood where all the dirt goes down -- gambling, drinking, dope-selling -- you know." - Press Kit (Priority Records, 1992). Lupe Fiasco "Samurai" (Album Stream)

Samurai is the ninth album by rapper Lupe Fiasco. It is a concept album dedicated to the life, work and career of the late neo-soul singer Amy Winehouse. In Lupe's own words, he shares, "A loving & living portrait to and of one of my favorite artists, Amy Winehouse. I've done many portraits of people I admire over the years. Some public and some private. This one took on a life of its own and became an album. Looking forward to sharing it." Specifically, it was inspired by a quote from the 2015 Amy documentary film, where Winehouse told her producer Salaam Remi, "I keep coming out with battle raps and they're just pouring out of me. Like Wu-Tang stuff, but really neat, very beautifully alliterated little battle raps. So next time you wanna come for me and have a battle rap-off, I'm gonna kill you. Because I'm a samurai." Lupe shared, "For me, it was literally just that one quote. I wouldn't dare try to rewrite or even postscript her legacy in any way other than just imagine everything like, 'Yo, what if she was a battle rapper?'" It began as a single portrait, unintentionally becoming an album." Hear Lupe Fiasco's conceptual album, Samurai, streaming below...

Da Beatminerz "Stifled Creativity" (Album Stream)

Da Beatminerz defined the dark, gritty sound of underground Hip-Hop in the '90s. Formed in 1992 by brothers Walter “Mr. Walt” and Ewart “DJ Evil Dee” Dewgarde, the production duo pioneered Hip-Hop's brooding vibes, a tonal shift that came with the release of Black Moon's classic debut album Enta Da Stage. As producers of the seminal 1993 project in its entirety, Da Beatminerz set a precedent for hardcore Hip-Hop. Their sample-heavy, gutter tracks laced with heavy basslines, and hard kicks and snares helped reshape the music genre. Da Beatminerz continued to refine their distinct sound and identity with countless classic records for other artists and two albums of their own (2001’s Brace 4 Impak and 2004’s Fully Loaded w/ Statik) over the course of their illustrious 30-year career. Stifled Creativity is the duo’s first full-length album in 20 years. “We started working on this album in 2009... We had one focus and the focus was to stick to our core sound. We just wanted to bring back our traditional way of attempting a classic album. Everybody has their own type of hip hop that they love. Well, this is ours.” - Mr. Walt. Maticulous "The Expanse" (Album Stream)

Brooklyn-based producer maticulous returns with his latest project, The Expanse, which is an exploration of time and space, both musically and personally. The record veers from the usual producer-album approach by shying away from the feature-heavy norm, focusing instead on one artist per song to develop a complete story on each track. “The inspiration for The Expanse flows from a long stretch of being stagnant, which renders the tracks with a variety of new sounds and ideas,” maticulous says. From the incomparable eLZhi’s tragic tale on “Two Kids” to the jarring, jaded truth of Rasheed Chappell’s “Bitter Pill” to The Audible Doctor’s “Butterfly Effect,” which closes the album with optimism and reflection, The Expanse once again proves that maticulous is among the elite in the world of modern hip hop producers. Props to fellow Fat Beats alumni! Listen to it below...
